Frosted Christmas Brownies

Frosted Christmas Brownies

  • Total Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 2 cups granulated white sugar
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon alcohol-free vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)
  • For the frosting: 1/2 cup softened butter
  • For the frosting: 2 cups powdered sugar
  • For the frosting: 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • For the frosting: 2 tablespoons milk
  • Festive red and green sprinkles for decorating

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×9 inch square baking pan with butter or line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal later.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter and granulated sugar until well combined. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then stir in the alcohol-free vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and glossy.
  3. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, and salt directly into the wet ingredients. Use a spatula to gently fold the mixture together until just combined, being careful not to overmix. If you are using chocolate chips, fold them in now.
  4. Pour the batter into your prepared baking pan and spread it evenly into the corners. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs. Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan before you attempt to frost them.
  5. In a medium bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and milk. Beat on medium-high speed until the frosting is light, fluffy, and easy to spread. You can add another teaspoon of milk if the frosting feels too stiff.
  6. Once the brownie base is totally cool, spread the frosting over the top in an even layer using an offset spatula. Immediately add your festive sprinkles so they stick to the fresh frosting. Let the frosting set for a few minutes before slicing into squares.
