Equipment

  • 6 Mini cups or small glass jars for serving

Ingredients

  • Chocolate or vanilla cake store-bought or homemade, cut into small cubes
  • Chocolate pudding or vanilla pudding chilled
  • Whipped topping or freshly whipped cream
  • Black food coloring optional for a darker look
  • Purple food coloring optional for the themed color layers
  • Crushed chocolate cookies or sandwich cookies for a crunchy layer
  • Sprinkles or candy decorations optional

Instructions

  • Cut the cake into small cubes and make sure your pudding is fully chilled. If you are using whipped cream, whip it until soft peaks form and divide it into bowls if you want different colors.
  • Add a small amount of black or purple food coloring to separate portions of the whipped cream, if desired. Stir gently until the color is even. Keep the shades soft or dramatic, depending on the look you want.
  • Add a spoonful of cake cubes to the bottom of each cup. Press them down lightly so the base feels sturdy, but still airy.
  • Spoon a layer of pudding over the cake, then add a layer of whipped cream. Repeat the layers if your cups are tall enough, alternating colors for a more striking look.
  • Top each trifle with crushed cookies, sprinkles, or candy decorations. Chill the cups for at least 30 minutes before serving so the layers settle nicely.

Notes

Store the assembled trifles covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. The cake will soften over time, but the flavor stays delicious and the dessert still looks great. Because this is a chilled dessert, there is no reheating needed. If you want to prepare ahead, you can also store the cake cubes, pudding, and whipped cream separately, then assemble just before serving.
